Neil Cole was born and raised in Los Angeles in 1960. By his own telling, he came to faith in Jesus while studying at California State University, Long Beach, where he completed a BA in Fine Art. Before ministry — and the mark this would leave on his later work is not incidental — he was an ocean lifeguard for Los Angeles County beaches. The lifeguard frame becomes the controlling metaphor of *Search & Rescue: Becoming a Disciple Who Makes a Difference* (Baker Books, 2008): the church is not a chapel for the saved, it is a search-and-rescue operation for the drowning.
